Garage goodies and pre-drywall meeting complete!

Our pre-drywall meeting is complete and they will be working on the drywall today!  It was a very informal meeting, not too much detail, I did see screws in our sub floor so I was happy about that :)  I we also discussed the egress window situation.  We will have a totally different type of window now since the normal one they use is a drop in, they will actually have to frame out the new hole with 2x4's and put a different window in, our PM said it will actually be more efficient and look better, but then I got the impression he didn't want to move the window (probably because it's expensive for them to do and cuts into their bottom line) but hey, it was their mistake and I want it fixed.  I was more nervous about the structural integrity of the foundation being compromised if they moved the window but our PM assured us there is nothing to worry about.  I think my husband is still worried though... anyone with some contracting knowledge have any insight on this??  The last think we want is to build a new house with foundation issues!  That is the reason we are building new and not buying "used"

At least we got a nice surprise to take our minds off of the window situation, when we checked out the garage we found goodies!  The cabinets are here, our door, sink and counters (I'm not a fan but we want to upgrade them ourselves down the line, I wasn't a big fan of the granite choices RH offered, and it was just out of our budget).

Now we just need to figure out our furniture situation, we keep going back and fourth and I can't decide on a dinning set... I think we will just use the set we have now which was the first set my parents ever bought, I grew up eating at that table so it will be good enough for now.  I really want to see the hardwoods all done before making a purchase like that.  I think we need a new sofa more than anything, ours is just so uncomfortable, so we are going to take most of our budget buying our dream sofa from Restoration Hardware.  So basically, we will have an old dinning set and a sofa and a bed and a broken desk and some old filing cabinets :)  But hey... one thing at a time, everything will come in time... I get so caught up in the excitement and wanting everything right now that I forget to take a step back and appreciate the fact that we are building this beautiful home and we have plenty of time to fill it up with stuff :)

Our counters for the kitchen, butter rum granite (not real granite lol!) they will do for now, hopefully upgrade them to quartz or granite next summer.
Cabinets are in all of those boxes!!  So excited to see the maple espresso with the hardwoods!
Oh morning room... :)  Some insulation popped out from the roof from all the wind we've been having but it's a snap to put it back in.  Look at all that sheet rock!  It's going to look VERY different by the end of the week!
I LOOOOVVEEE our door!!! It's so cute and craftsman like, it will really give dimension to the front of the house!  And below, our future sofa... it's the most comfy sofa I've ever laid on!  I will have no problem falling asleep on it and curling up with Mr. Tickles and my husband watching movies...

  1. Great looking front door! We're getting the butter rum granite laminate on our wet bar, but also hope to swap it for quartz or granite sooner, rather than later. We've been undecided on how to orient the lighting in the bathroom. Thankfully it looks nice either way, but I may ask that the shades face downwards to make it easier to change the lightbulbs.

    1. Our PM said that the lights in his photos show them facing down and he can't deviate from the pic, but it's easy to change. I want them down anyways, for changing bulbs and if they face up they get filthy from hair spray and dust and make up powders flying around. They also will provide more light facing downward.

  3. I love the sofa. It looks very comfy. I, like you, have come to the conclusion I can't have it all now. So, I am going with temp shades till I get my furniture and see how it all comes together before we decide on the window treatments. I think I finally found a sofa and loveseat I like, just have to see if my hubby approves. I will have old and new things mixed together too for awhile. And some empty rooms :-).

Thanks for mentioning the lights facing down, I never really thought about it and I think I would like them to face down. So, another text to the PM

    1. Yeah, my parents still have a bunch of those temp shades, I'm going to check out HD this weekend and see about ordering the blinds now, we are just going to go with the basic faux wood ones in white, I know I want to do extra long floor to ceiling linen drapes, which are going to cost a butt load but that will be later, after our 10 month and we can paint, I figure I have 10 months to save up for window treatments, 50 bucks every pay check will allow me to buy 6 linen panels from RH :( I am just so obsessed with their drapes I can't find anything else that compares, or if I do it's even more expensive!

    2. I went to HD this past friday. They have a sale going on so be sure to ask about. I think you have to place your order before 5/5. I like the faux wood in white, hubby is not crazy about them so we are at impasse (another reason to wait too)

You go girl you got a plan for getting what you want! :-)

  4. Finally we got some nicer weather huh? But always a chance of rain, which delays my concrete pouring every damn day!

Wait on any couch till you get in the house, trust me!! Things just don't fit like you thought they would.

Glad to hear about the screws, I wondered about that int he floors??

Stick to your guns on that window, why does RH have to fight us on things that are JUST WRONG!!

    1. I feel like I should be the one to have to compromise but that is not the case, I understand that people spend more money than me on a custom house and some people may think my house is a postage stamp compare to theirs but come on, over 1/4 a million dollars is a lot of money to 99% of people and I don't think it's much to ask to get what was pomised and what I expect and I will not compromise!

  5. Already at drywall - great!

That's really good they screwed your subfloor - from what everyone has told me it makes a big difference in reduction of floor squeaks.

I think it was a good decision to wait for the granite. It's too expensive (and for most of us a long-term) upgrade to pick something that you are not totally happy with. It will be easy to replace down the line. Still wishing I would have done that. The laminate you picked is really pretty and I think it will go great with the espresso cabinets.

No, you should not compromise on the window. It should be built the way you were expecting (and what you paid for). I'm dealing with the same kind of thing with my basement bath rough-in (pipes are there but the sink drain is in the wrong place). From my experience and what I've read, I think Ryan sometimes acts like they are doing us a favor... NOT TRUE - we pay them and deserve to have things done right!!!

    1. Yeah, the granite is something we can just pay cash to do rather than put it in the mortgage, we did the things that were going to be just as expensive, more expensive or impossible to upgrade in the future.

And, sometimes, you do get that feeling like they are doing us a favor but really, it's OUR money! and it's a LOT of money! I think we are entitled to get what we pay for and what was promised, and so far my experience has been great despite the few hiccups, I just kind of brushed off that impression I got at our dry-wall meeting, I mean, we could have just been over thinking, I think if anything, he saw we were nervous about filling it back in and cutting a new hole so maybe he was trying to make us feel better if we decided to leave it there in the back. I am curious to see how they do it though so I will be stalking the site during the whole process!
